An Active Cultural and Outdoor Life

With nearly 1,000 lakes, it’s easy to enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle –whether it’s swimming, fishing, boating, or paddling. The Dalsland Canal runs like a blue thread through our municipality. In winter, we go ice skating and cross-country skiing, and for cycling enthusiasts, there are fantastic gravel roads to explore. Equestrian sports are deeply rooted in the local spirit, as seen in our trotting and riding schools. Many active associations offer activities for children and youth, including football, scouting, golf, floorball, boxing, alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and karate. At the School of the Arts, children can choose music, dance, visual arts, and design.

Music, exhibitions, and events contribute to a vibrant cultural life. Årjäng is home to Kyrkerud Folk High School with an artistic profile, a three-kilometer sculpture walk, our beloved Årjäng Troll, and beautiful canal lock environments. Every September, the Årjäng Market attracts up to 100,000 visitors over one weekend.

Did you know... Årjäng Municipality is located in one of Sweden’s most lake-rich regions. Here you'll find the Dalsland–Nordmarken lake system – a natural area spanning nearly 10,000 km², where lakes are connected by the historic and scenic Dalsland Canal.

Strong Entrepreneurial Tradition

The local business community is characterized by diversity and a strong tradition of entrepreneurship. Many residents run their own businesses. Trade, services, and manufacturing dominate, and several companies in the manufacturing sector are leading both nationally and internationally.

Travel time to Oslo and Oslo’s international airport, Gardermoen, is about one and a half hours. It takes around three hours to reach Gothenburg, and about four hours to get to Stockholm.
